Many individuals decide to buy their houses soon after they get married. They buy them thinking that they are a lot more spacious than anything they’ll ever need. Even so, over the years, things change. The couple adds more possessions, babies are born, and the house just appears to be straining at the seams to encompass it all. This is the time the dilemma will start. Should we purchase a new house, though we love the one we’re in, or should we find an alternative solution? As people start thinking about expansion, refinishing basements gets to be a key thing to consider. In fact, this method won’t necessitate moving, but it’ll make use of extra space in the house you already own.

Refinishing basements expands living space

Infants do not require a lot of space. They can crawl around in a couple of rooms and be perfectly content. When they start maturing, though, their play gets to be more active, and they need room to run around and let off steam. During the summer time it’s easy just to send them outside. During the cold months, though, when they are a lot more confined to your house, you need space to be able to have fun. Nothing could possibly be much more ideal than having a few basement refinishing ideas and turning your own cellar into an entertainment area which can be used by the whole family. Performing a basement remodel will be a far less expensive method of getting the needed space without needing to pay moving costs or perhaps build an add-on onto your house.

Even if you do not have young children, your personal interests are going to develop over time, plus your friendship base will grow so much that you will want to entertain more than just one or two folks. Creating an entertainment area in your basement is yet another good reason for doing a bit of remodeling. Maybe you’ll want to put in a bar, a conversation area, a pool table, along with the other accessories which make for excellent entertaining.

Refinishing basements add personal benefit for the current homeowner as well as additional resale value

When all is said and done, you simply can’t lose by refinishing your basement. You will get the added living area for all the years that you live in your house, and refinishing basements can add as much as 30% to the resale value, by increasing living space, should you decide to sell in later years.

Well the procedure is not to difficult and is so well described in the post.

Are there any wood flooring products that can be installed in a basement? I will be using a raised floor with a tongue in groove subfloor, overtop moisture barrier. I live in a rather dry climate.

  • Myra Neuford says:

Yes, Glenn there are laminate flooring products now that are approved for both bathrooms and basements. You do need to consult with your building supply and make sure they know where you are installing the product.

Also, follow the recommended guidelines for installing to a ‘tee’, so you don’t nullify the warranty.

Another good option is vinyl plank flooring. It isn’t a wood product, but if you select one with texture to the grain, it looks for all the world like the real thing once installed. It is very forgiving, and easy to maintain.
