Variable Speed Pool Pumps – The Future of Swimming Pools

By choosing the proper pump, Swimming pool owners can expect savings of at least $400/year.

Very few pool owners realize the energy consumption of their very own pool and spa pump.  In fact, the pool pump is probably one of the largest electricity consuming appliances they have on their property.  It’s because standard pool and spa pumps are made with a single stage motor, that is very in-efficient.  In the past, energy supply has been in abundance and energy conservation efforts have not been considered – a norm in the swimming pool industry.

So how much energy is my pool and spa pump using? A recent study found that to operate California’s 1.2 million pools and spas requires roughly the same output as one nuclear power or two conventional energy plants (study by Davis Energy Group for Pacific Gas & Electric – 2004).  Simply consider ALL the swimming pools across the U.S., and the power consumed by these family favorites.  Arizona too has an incredible abundance of swimming pools per home, which is why Phoenix pool contractors are switching to these incredible new pumps.

The solution? Motors and Pumps that use less energy (by working smarter).

In the past few years, pool and spa pumps and motors have been part of a huge power-saving improvement effort.  The newest in electricity savings has come from the introduction of the revolutionary variable drive, variable speed pool and spa pump.  By using permanent magnetic motors, these new pool pumps have been designed to use less electricity.  Permanent magnet motors, usually used in hybrid cars, provide about 30% power savings over standard induction motors. By simply programming the pump to work at the least required speed for each pool task (heating, cleaning, circulation, water features, etc.) electricity reduction can be as much as 90%!

By operating a pool and spa pump at its slowest speed necessary to perform a task, it will dramatically slash the energy usage (merely because it requires less power to push water slowly than rapidly).  Did you know?  On a typical swimming pool task, if a pump can reduce the speed by 1/2, then the electricity will be reduced to 1/8.  Simply put, these new pumps allow the swimming pool owner to program and “dial in” the pump speed to achieve the minimum electricity use.

Energy Savings of $620 to $1,350

According to Pentair Pool Products, their IntelliFlo® and IntelliPro™ variable drive pumps routinely reduce energy use up to 90%, depending on the models and circumstances for average savings of $620 to $1,350 annually.  Many pool owners are having their out-dated pumps replaced because the huge cost savings will actually pay for the new variable speed pool pump.

Power delivery charges are even higher in Arizona, and with Phoenix’s huge pool count, this new pump has become an absolute necessity for pool companies in Arizona when contracting swimming pools.  The recent attention to electricity efficient products makes owning a GREEN industry swimming pool pump even more desirable in California too.

Specific Examples of how IntelliFlo pumps by Pentair can be used in your swimming pool:

First and foremost, this pump can be used for an infloor cleaning system pump, and it’s set at 3000 Rev’s per minute, which is approximately a two HP pump.  The same swimming pool pump can be turned down to a half HP swimming pool pump to circulate & clean the water of the swimming pool.  With some simple computer automation, the same swimming pool pump can be used as a booster pump for the hot tub jets (imagine a slow speed jet and a high speed jet – all from the same pump, and the push of a remote!)  Another practical use is the ability to control the speed of a waterfall or pool water feature (it is also known to be used by high end residential Phoenix landscaping companies to manage the sound & flow of detailed landscape waterfalls & ponds).  The IntelliFlo Pentair pump can be set for multiple speeds -  giving the pool owner a low speed fountain for a quiet evening outside on the patio, or you can ramp the speed higher for MAX PRESSURE for a backyard party!
