Lighting is important both inside and outside a home, and provides a variety of benefits.

How we light the inside of our homes can be very functional and concentrated in certain areas such as a home office, a reading area or in the kitchen food preparation area where light is geared to a particular task or activity.

Other interior lighting can be designated to set a mood or create a certain atmosphere. For instance: some light fixtures in a living room or family room may be for providing a relaxing environment for conversation or watching television when intense lighting is not needed.

The bathroom is another place where both task lighting and mood lighting are of benefit. Good lighting needs to be provided in the grooming or vanity area, but if you have a large soaking tub or a whirlpool it adds to the experience by also providing subdued lighting for those occasions.

Exterior lighting considerations

Exterior lighting is much the same as lighting indoors in some respects. Good lighting should be provided for walkways, and the path to the front door to welcome guests and provide safety.

Patio or landscape lighting is different. Patio lighting needs to be adequate and give a cheerful feeling to this area of relaxation. Landscape lighting need not be very bright, but is mostly for effect and giving a home a welcoming look.

Exterior lights are desirable during the nighttime hours to ward off unwelcome guests, but fixtures with sensors will eliminate overkill when you forget to turn it off.

Solar is a good option for landscape lighting.

When updating your home, consider needs as you go, and try to integrate energy saving measures where possible. Low energy solutions may work very well where intense lighting isn’t needed, as well as provide some ease in your budget.
